Yep, I;m interested. Just for fun I looked up some state symbols for Minnesota. there are more things than one knows about. Some are official & some are not. For Mn. they are....Bird...the common loon

Butterfly...the monarch

Drink....Milk

fish...walleye

Flower...Showy lady slipper

Fruit...honeycrisp apple

Gemstone...Lake Superior Agate

Grain...wild rice

Muffin...blueberry

Mushroom...morel

Photo..."Grace" photograhed by Eric Enstrom, 1918, Bovey, Mn. this is a surprise because I have seen this picture many times. It is of an older white haired man giving thanks for the bread & food on the table B4 him. I'll bet lots of you may have seen this.

Tree...Norway or Red Pine    Just some trivia for ya.

I didn't know that picture was the state pic...wow
but I did know some of them were state stuff.
I just noticed a quilt at work.  It is all the fifty states with birds on it.  It was donated and
I don't know what they are doing with it.  But the birds were all embroidered on it.
It was really neat.
Is that what we are doing, states?
I am in!!!!

I'm in as long as it isn't due any time soon. I have 2 more baby quilts to make, my daughter's quilt top (2007 Christmas gift!) that needs to be layered and quilted, our friendship quilt blocks to set into a top, and a quilt top that I'm using to teach an "under-privileged" young lady how to sew. I'm a bit overwhelmed with quilting at the moment :)

Oh, I agree Janice...for sure we need a break from the 1st block exchange. I am happy to know what the "theme" of the next one is tho. gives me time to think. (it sometimes takes awhile for great ideas to happen) I am not ready to start anything just yet....I also have lots of loose ends here! baby quilts started, some that need to be started. As usual I have lots of undone projects!

Thanks for starting this, Tinker.   I'm in.  it is amazing what you learn about your state when you start something like this.  Wouldn' it be great if we had at least one block from each state?

Ok, I have started a list of people that want in.  We can just get the names now and decide on date and size at a later time as everyone seems pretty busy with the coming of spring.

I don't know how to quilt (not yet anyway) but I surely did enjoy looking at all the blocks everyone made for the last one, wow you ladies sure are creative and talented!  I do have a question though (even though i'm not going to participate), what if there's more than one person from the same state?  Just curious ladies not meaning to 'stir anything up'.

Well, we aren't sure if we are putting state outline, flowers or whatever yet.  If we all do different state somethings or other it will work out just fine.

Well, I was thinking that also...being me and Pine are both from MN.  But I really don't care..and
we can add something else to it.  Like the flower, bird or whatever and not tell each other.  We can
mark where we live on it also, so that will be fun.  So it could be different in some respect.
nice...

I wasn't thinking of an outline of my state...because you all know I have done that. but I was thinking of something that represents my state. You all don't want to see the same style block again from me...hopefully I can come up with something interesting & pleasing.

Hi Ladies, you can count me in too!  I did some research on NY and I couldn't believe what I saw - we have a state fossil! Who would have thought! I also think we need a little breathing room before we start this one. I'm not quite as creative as the rest of you ladies so I'll need all the time I can get.  lol

Hey ladies count me in, maybe if more than one is from the same state perhapse they were born in another state . That might give us some variety. Just a thought.

Nicky I'll send pict by snall mail not smart enough to get it on line

Ok, I'm making a file with everyone that wants in when we decide to start.  I know this is a busy time for everyone.  So we can take a break then, get back to it.

I think it would be  quite a coincidence if 2 people, even from the same state, did the same block so for my part I think it would just add interest.   After all this is blocks of where we live not of the states.

Has anyone given any thought to the size of the block yet?

were born there.  But when my dad got out of the service we moved back here.

I'd definitely like to be involved---if we don't have to begin tomorrow.  I have a few other things to finish first---like the last quilt.

I didn't think the object was to "trace" your home state, I though it was to "represent" your state. If I'm on the wrong track someone please let me know now before the brain-cells burn out on the wrong project LOL

I got you on the list, Jenx.

Things are busy here also with the end of school in sight.  Also we need to give Nicky time to finish up before we all jump into another quilt.  I want to get my friendship quilt figured out first also.

I was thinking that maybe we should say that each block must have the State or Providence name on it, then each person can put whatever they want that represents their state or prov.

I like the larger block sizes, easier to see and work with,  10.5 x 10.5 or 12.5 x 12.5.  How about it ladies, what do you all think?

I have started a folder and a file with people that want in and I will keep a file with all of our decisions as we make them, so we don't get lost trying to back track all the time.

I am for either of those sizes Tinker.  I was thinking an outline of the state so that we
could put a bead or something where we live...but if everyone else wants to do whatever
I guess its up to the majority.  Yes, I know Pine did that already...lol  Maybe a larger
outline and a flower, bird or else wise in the center?

I think that as long as it represents our own HOME state...Anyone can still do an outline of their state...(Judy, would you like one of my coasters!!? I can mail you one) I'm thinking of some of the state symbols or maybe a landscape style block showing some of the things in our state. (similar but not the same as Tinkers') I could do,but highly unlikely a Mn. Vikings block, ha, LOL! anything along the line of our individual states...and I doubt any would be very much alike. So what if they were...just space them in the quilt top. There are some quilt blocks that have the names of states in them...or cities...Lemoyne Star, Rocky road to Kansas, Road to Oklahoma, Indiana Puzzle, Kansas Trouble, Road to Calif., Georgetown circles, St; Louis Star, Ohio Star, N. Carolina Lily. And a lot of the blocks have references towards certain parts of the U.S., etc.

And of course the name of our town & state is a must. Oh...I got my sewing machine back from the repair shop. It cost $90 which I think is very reasonable considering all that I had wrong with it...But I haven't had a chance to set it up yet & check it out. That will be the true test. I'm really happy to have it back. If it is working good, I can do more things with this next block than I could with the last one. Like embroider. I hope it's all working.

There is so much we could do...it will be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.
If you have a spare coaster, I wouldn't mind it.  I think I have a wooden state block that was suppose
to have a hole in the middle and embroidering in that..But I decorated them different.
I gave those to exchange students that I had to remind them of Ellsworth, MN...hehehe
it was kinda neat.  will have to see if I have one yet.

Mornin girls, what ever size you deciede on is fine with me. I think the chance to have two alike are very slim. It seems like this one will be more fun than the last. Maybe it will get our creative thoughts going

I had this strange idea last night about doing one of the blocks on my quilt by cutting a pocket with a button and flap off an old pair of pants and putting onto the block, then I could put a paper with date, list of participants or the notes that I reiceived with each block into it.  Then I would always have the information with the quilt.

Does that sound dumb?

Far from dumb, Tink.  I think it's a fantastic idea.  I wonder tho, if the info would be better written on a scrap of fabric with a fabric pen and slipped into the pocket.  Oooh,  I see endless possibilities again.  Thanks for the tip.

Hi everyone, My computer finally let me back in.

Tink I think you have a great Idea,  another thing you could do is use the transfre fabric and just make a block with the notes on it,  It is very easy.  When you scan your notes into the computer don't forget to flip them.  I'm still waiting for pictures.

I forgot ------- a great place to find info about your state is the dept. of tourism.  Also our Sec of Atate's office  has been a great help to me In Ms. its the person in charge of education and publication.

We decide on a size of block with seam allowances.  Then each person makes a block for all of the people that sign up before a deadline including yourself.  We have been putting our username and where we live on them also. The rest is up to you how you put it together.

I have been making a list of people that are interested, but we have all been finishing up a different friendship quilt, and busy with the arrival of gardening season!

Welcome DMP! We would LOVE to have you join in the quilt block exchange. It's not too late, we are still in the planning stages. (I know I am.) Our "theme" for the block this time is the STATE (or province for Canada) we live in. With the idea that your block should show something that represents your state.

I don't believe we have settled on a size yet...Our last block was made 12.5" & it will be 12" in when sewn into the quilt top (or whatever each person decides to use them for). We had about 14-15 contributors. I think, if you look at the thread called "friendship quilt" ? under the sewing category...You can read how we posted while working on our blocks. And if you look in JENX's photo-album, she has pics of the blocks we made. (thanks Jenx)

I'm still up in the air about how to design my block. Nothing has really struck me just yet. (and my 1st block was a state design, so I want something new) Keep reading the posts & jump in when you want & let us know what you think. YOU might have some good ideas for us too!

I am neck deep in my Mississippi quilt, I hope I get inspiration and not burn out from it.lol  BTW for what it's worth everyone knows I like the 12" block.  Even larger if there are no more than 12 and we need more space to do what we want.  Has anyone counted the # states involved at this point?  I now have Judy, Tinker, JK, Jenx and Betty's pictures.  I guess 6 outa 12 ain't bad.  I surely would like to have the others.!.

DMP welcome to our part of the site.  Hope you like it here.   You are more than welcome here ,  we all learn from each other.  Old timers (like me) can always learn new things from the younger gals.

Tinker Busy Nommies needs help getting her picture up.  I did good getting mine up but better not attempt helpping someone else.

I'm fairly new to the forum, but count me in.  My mom and I just got a long arm Statler sticher and I'm trying to find all kinds of different projects to do on it.

How many people are on the list so far? Do you make the same exact block for everyone or could you make a variety of blocks for your state?  There's a lot of neat pattern's I've seen for Arizona stuff that would be fun to play with.

Cool Michelle.  I think we are still in the setting up stages with this quilt too.
No real decisions have been made that I know of.  The last quilt we made the same
square for each person.  I am thinking the size will have to do with how many are in
the exchange.  We had twelve in the last one, with the squares 12 1/2 by 12 1/2..
That was a good size for that amount...so maybe the next one will be the same...but I
can't say for sure.

It would be great to have you Rudy. The more we have the better the end result. I think we are all kind of taking a break...either working on the last quilt blocks..I know I have lots of other things to tend to right now. Yard/Garden & housework are calling out loud for me...and I start a new PT job today...Yuck, I have to work from Sat. to Sat.

I still don't have a definite plan for my next block. Hopefully something will come to mind if I think about it enough.

Hi Pine, About a year ago a neighbor ask me to desige a quilt for him and help his wife make it.  He wanted the map of the state as the "centerpiece" .  From there I was on my own.  His wife and I (me mostly) have worked for a year collecting things about the state that he wants on it.  I have now found the things I want on it and have started to put it together.  When you are "playing it by ear" you have to do a good bit of backing up and starting over.lol  Hopefully it want be to long now before it is finished.

Oooh, That sounds nice Nicky. I am imagining a little something like one of those "tourist" tablecloths, or scarves you can buy. With the state & some roads, towns & some items of interest pictured on it? I'm sure they will love it no matter how it turns out...It will be a great conversation piece for years to come...BE SURE to post a pic, ok?

I've mostly settled on a design for my Arizona blocks.  It's a combination of several techniques.  Is that okay with everyone or is there a preference for/against embroidery, applique, paper piecing, etc. when doing these kinds of block exchanges?
