By: Kathleen George

Online Rating: (8.5/10)

You will need:
•    Two 5" craft foam eggs
•    Paper punches: 2" daisy,
    1" daisy, 5/8" daisy, 11/4" flower, 5/8" round, 1/4" round,1/8" round
•    Brightly colored scrapbookingpaper of your choice
•    Modeling paste
•    Disposable mixing cup
•    Soft, flat paint brush
•    Fine sand paper
•    Acrylic craft paint: lavender, bright gold
•    Craft pins
•    Wooden skewer or chopstick
•    Tacky craft glue
•    Damp cloth, scissors, table knife

* The following products were used for this project: STYROFOAM®* brand foam, trademark of The Dow Chemical Co. • Liquitex light modeling paste.

To start:
Trace patterns cut out.  (Image 1).

STEP 1: Cover eggs with paste. Place modeling paste in a container and mix well with a table knife until it is smooth. Add a small amount of water if the paste seems thick. For better handling, push a wooden skewer into the bottom of the foam egg. Brush on paste using a paint brush. Make a smooth, even surface by dipping the brush in water occasionally as you work. Use long, light strokes with the brush. When finished, place the skewer in a jar to dry. Leave skewer in for the painting and decorating stages as well. When thoroughly dry, sand lightly. Apply a second coat of paste if you wish. When thoroughly dry, sand lightly again.

STEP 2: Paint eggs. Wipe the eggs with a damp cloth and paint with acrylic craft paint in the colors of your choice. Set aside to dry.

STEP 3: Punch out flowers. Punch out paper flowers in the colored scrapbooking paper of your choice.  Plan on making approximately two of the 2" daisies and five of the 11/4" flowers in your main color scheme.  Use contrasting accent colors for four to six of the 1" daisies and 10 to 15 of the smallest flowers. Punch out contrasting centers for the flowers and glue on with white craft glue.

STEP 4: Cut strips & leaves. Cut five thin strips of paper 3" x 1/8". Note: A paper trimmer works well. Curl the strips by rolling them tightly around a skewer and then gently pulling just enough to leave a curl. Use patterns to trace leaves onto green paper and cut out 2 large, 3 medium, and 3 small leaves for each egg.

STEP 5: Finish. Glue the flowers, leaves, and strips on eggs. Secure ends of leaves and strips with craft pins and glue.

This idea inspired me to do a twist on the project to make it easy for the residents at an assisted living community. Start with a papier mache' egg, add a thin layer of Mod Podge, wrap tissue paper around the egg for color, then place foam flowers all around the outside. A small bow glued to the top is a great finish. They make beautiful eggs!

Glittering Green Glass

I recycle old car windows and patio doors. I paint the pieces with stained glass paint. Then I make a design, glue onto glass containers I find at local thrift stores, and grout. Add a candle and they are very beautiful.
