Glass Bead Jewelry
Learn the basics of beading with this simple but beautiful jewelry set.
By: Niki Meiners

Online Rating: (9/10)

The beauty of this glass bead set is its complex look with only the simplest skills required. All you need are a few tools and an afternoon!

Finished sizes: 18" Necklace
8" Bracelet

Skill: 1 Time: 1 Cost: 3

You will need:
• One pkg. 4mm green Picasso faceted bicone glass beads*
• One 16" strand 6mm topaz brown/silver cathedral fire-polished glass beads*
• One 8" strand 7mm clear/blue cathedral fire-polished glass beads*
• One 8" strand 7mm pink cathedral fire-polished glass beads*
• Two sets dragonfly design pewter loop clasps
• One pkg. 1 1/2" eye pins
• Flat-nose pliers
• Round-nose pliers
• Ruler or tape measure
Optional: Jewelry tray

*Fire Mountain Beads were used for this project.

Step 1: Make first section. Following diagram, load eye pin with one bicone bead and one cathedral bead (Figure 1). Use flat-nose pliers to bend end of eye pin 90 degrees (Figure 2). Grip wire 1/8" in from end with round-nose pliers and roll wire around pliers into a circle (Figure 3).

Step 2: Make remaining sections. Repeat Step 1 to make ten sections for each color combination bicone & pink, bicone & olive, bicone and blue, etc.)

Step 3: Join sections. Alternate completed sections to make a pattern or choose randomly. To attach sections, use pliers to open circle at end of eye pin, hook to next section, and close. For necklace, make two strands of 28 sections each. For bracelet, make two strands of 11 sections each.

Step 4: Finish. Attach dragonfly closures to finished strands in same way as Step 3. To adjust length, add or remove sections.

It appears that the olive/silver beads were left off the "you will need" list. The picture of the items shows 4 different colors of beads; blue, topaz, pink & olive along with the 4mm Picasso beads. And judging from the pics, the pink should be pink/silver -6mm. Is this correct? I noticed all this AFTER I had ordered my items from fire mountain. So...I haven't made the pieces yet, but they look beautiful.

I'm a jewelry nut. If it looks and sounds easy, I make it. This is a very simple project. You get to choose any color beads you like or use their design. If it looks good, go for it. If you don't like the finished look, redo. This is a neat project to learn jewelry making on.

I'm thinking of taking up beading as a small business venture with my teen girls. This is a good way to get started.

I am going to try and make this as soon as I can get all the supplies together. But I think I will change it a little to be more my style. But I will also make one just like the picture for my 8 year old daughter.

This is a good idea. I have been wire wraping stones but I have other beads that I have picked up that don't go with any stone. Some times I forget to go back to basics. I like it!

I am definitely going to try this. I've made a few other easy pieces of jewelry, but I love the glass beads and the colors on this set. This could be made in colors for all seasons or holidays.
