Needle Felted Egg Basket

Create a bold funky Easter centerpiece with this bright basket. Welcome spring with flair and “eggstrodinary” style!

You will need:
• Craft foam shapes*: 6" ball, three 1 7/8” x 2 1/2” eggs
• Wool roving*: (2 oz each) Natural, Purple, Orange, Blue, Pink, Cool Waters, Black
• Needle felting tool & mat*
• Yellow excelsior
• Craft foam adhesive*
• Fabric adhesive*
• Optional: use scrap of foam as needle felting surface
• Optional: craft knife
Cardstock scrap, pencil, pins, serrated knife, sharp scissors, toothpicks

*The following products were used for this project: Beacon Adhesives Fabri-tac & Hold The Foam adhesives • Clover needle felting tool and mat • National Nonwovens Wool Wisps wool roving • STYROFOAM craft foam shapes.

STEP 1: Make basket. Use serrated knife to cut thin slice off bottom of ball so it will sit flat. Cut 4" wide slice off top of ball. Hollow out top of ball 1 1/2". Needle felt entire ball with Natural.

STEP 2: Embellish basket. Pull thin strands of Black and needle felt on diagonal around entire basket (Photo A). For flower, trace flower pattern on 4" square of cardstock. To make stencil, use scissors or craft knife to cut out flower. Pin flower stencil on ball. Add pieces of Pink and needle felt inside stencil (Photo B). Repeat with Yellow for second flower. Place a small ball of Black in center of both flowers and needle felt.

STEP 3: Make eggs. Cut eggs in half lengthwise. Cover five egg halves with Orange, Blue, Cool Waters, Purple and Pink wool. Needle felt each half. Needle felt black polka dots onto Pink egg, Cool Waters onto Orange, Yellow onto Purple and all colored polka dots onto Blue egg. Needle felt small balls of black into center of Orange polka dots on Cool Water egg (Photo C).

STEP 4: Finish. Glue excelsior into top of basket with craft foam glue. Glue toothpicks into bottom of each egg. Arrange and glue eggs into basket opening with fabric glue.

Organizing Floss and Threads

To keep down clutter in my sewing room and keep some semblance of order to leftover floss and threads, I start with a clean, dry box that used to hold baby wipes. Then I cut down old envelopes that come in the mail to fit inside, seal them and cut each end off with a tab extending up at varying places to make them look like file tabs. With floss that’s left from a project, I write the type (DMC, Coats & Clarks, etc.) and the color number on the tab, wind the floss around two fingers, put it in the pocket and then stack them in numerical order in the box. It takes up a lot less room than bags of this and that.
