Want a fun holiday gift for a young Harry Potter fan? Consider knitting him or her a unique scarf in the Wizard colors from the phenomenally popular book series.
Lion Brand Yarn Company of Carlstadt, New Jersey offers a free pattern for “Wizard scarves” on their web site (www.lionbrand.com) based on the colors of the four houses at Harry Potter’s school. There are patterns for scarves related to Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw.
According to Ilana Rabinowitz, director of consumer marketing at Lion Brand, the pattern has been downloaded more than 100,000 times since the release last summer of the latest Potter book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The free patterns came about when an associate at the Gilroy, California Barnes and Noble store contacted Lion Brand. She wanted to purchase a certain yarn from Lion so that she could make 60 scarves for every employee to wear to promote the book for its midnight release. The associate planned to make the scarves with a combination of hand-knitting and a small knitting machine, according to Rabinowitz.
“She sent us a couple of them, and we put up a pattern on our web site, and our customers get it for free,” Rabinowitz explains. “And they started making the scarves, and it’s been a really popular feature.”
In addition to the scarves, Lion Brand has nearly 1,000 free knitting patterns on its web site.
